Over the years Rick has written hundreds of by-lined newspaper articles, columns and reviews. His articles have been purchased by major magazines such as National Geographic, Modern Maturity, National Gardening Magazine and others. His newspaper reporting was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He was recipient of a 6-month traveling Editor’s Fellowship from the Ford Foundation.

Rick is writing a series of copyrighted articles about the gem uses of garnet to appear on this site. More in the series will appear here as they are completed. Rick’s friend Hans Durstling, creator of the acclaimed Canadian Discovery television gem series Stones of Fame and Fortune cajoled him into using the first in the series to help launch his own virtual publication Lapidary World:

As a member of the American Opal Society he has contributed several articles to the Society’s international newsletter The Opal Express. While he loves all gem stones, opal may be his favorite. Puzzled why anyone could possibly consider opal a "bad luck" stone, he researched and wrote:
